Our mission is to help rehome homeless and unwanted dogs in Washington State by providing the resources to enable proper matchmaking for the dog and the new family. We do not do same day adoptions because our process requires an application process with reference/background and physical home checks. This process ensures we meet the goals of our mission.

Smidget Rescue is a small organization with one founder and several volunteers and fosters. We do not have a shelter facility and our dogs live with foster families in homes all around the Puget Sound. We are always looking for new foster homes!

Smidget Rescue was founded in December of 2010. We started off saving small dogs off the euthanasia list in California shelters. We have evolved over the years and now concentrate on local Washington dogs; from local shelters, direct owner surrenders and strays. We have have found homes for over 3000 dogs since inception.
Let's be clear: adoption fees keep this rescue alive.
Every dog gets spay/neuter ($400-$650), vaccines ($100), microchip ($50), deworming ($20) and flea control ($30). That's the baseline. Many need dentals ($800-$2000), emergency care ($2500-$5000), wound repair, behavioral rehab or treatment for parvo, starvation, broken bones. You name it, we've seen it.
A healthy dog costs over $700 in medical care alone. Add in phone bills, marketing, events and keeping this website running, and the numbers add up fast.
"You're just out to make a PROFIT!"
Really? We're fighting for spots in low-cost spay/neuter programs right alongside you. Washington State has some of the highest vet costs in the country. We're not rolling in cash. We're trying not to drown in debt.
Any "profit" goes straight to the next $5000 ER bill. Rescues that can't stay afloat close their doors. Period.
Why aren't fees published?
Because every dog is different. Some arrive with medical care covered (our "Hero Dogs") and their fees help cover the dogs that cost us thousands.
Want to know a specific dog's fee? Ask us directly. We're happy to explain.
